School of Sociology student Helen Law has received a PhD top-up scholarship towards her work on youth involvement and gender segregation in science in Australia and Taiwan.

The scholarship, worth $15,000 over three years, was awarded to Ms Law by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research.

Ms Law moved to Canberra from Hong Kong to begin her PhD at ANU in March this year. She says that the top-up scholarship will allow her to focus on her research and attend more local and international conferences.

“I want to look at whether gender segregation in higher education and occupations may have formed before adolescents participate in higher education in both Asian and Western contexts,” she said.

“In the US, a lot of girls do really well in maths and science, but they drop out before University. If this segregation continues it might have an impact on future job markets and income.”

Ms Law also received the Aage B Sørensen Memorial Student Award to present her work at the International Sociological Association conference in Hong Kong in May.
